Should Think Before You Download Music?
Back in the rock and roll boom of the sixties no one thought music could be listened to on a computer. And who back then thought that people could record music without paying for it? They did not worry that people would download music for free. Can you imagine the Beatles worried that people were taking their music for free?
You can get music for free on the internet if you know the simple technology required to record music onto your computer. George Harrison wrote and recorded the song, “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.” You can download it for free somewhere online. His guitar probably weeps for all the people who take the song for free.
Artists, whether they are writers, actors, or musicians, start their career by working for free. This is the way they have to get noticed. Give away your work for free and maybe next time someone will pay for it. But the artist who has gone through this does not want to continue to give away his or her work for free. He has to make a living after all.
Ask most people who down load music and they will not say it is illegal however. If people can legally record music off the radio and movies off the TV then why not off the internet?
The difference is in the new technology. The internet now provides clean recording of music. It also provides the ability to select the music people can hear rather than waiting for a radio station to play the song one wants to record.
It comes down to copyright infringement. People sharing their music online do not in most cases own the copyright to the music they make available. When other people record or download files of music others, who do not own the copyright, then there is a violation.
Think of it this way. If you buy a music compact disc you can make as many recordings of that compact disc as you like. As long as you do not sell those copies or give them to someone else. You can use them in your car. Or have them as a back up. But once you give or sell them, you have violated the copyright owner’s rights.
There have been some notable legal cases where music companies have sued individuals who have downloaded music off the internet in violation of copyright laws. And these companies have won multi million dollar lawsuits against individuals who knowingly or unknowingly knew they were taking music illegally.
There is an answer to this issue. There is a way to stay within the copyright law and still be able to download your favorite music. There are many pay sites on the internet where you can pay a monthly download fee or a per song download fee. The online service is responsible for dealing with the copyright issues. If there is a conflict with the music company, it is the on line service that is responsible not you.
If you want to download music, who can blame you? Your favorite music is only a click away. But make sure you are within the law before you take that next song off the internet. You do not want to be the next person the music industry tries to target.
